Chile Mining Sector Report 2022-2023

In 2020, Chile sustained its position as the world’s leading copper mine producer, with a 27.8% share in global output; the second biggest molybdenum miner, with a 20.6% share; and the fourth largest producer of silver, with a 6.4% share. The country also ranked first in the production of iodine, accounting for 73% of global output, second in lithium compounds (21.9%) and eighth in potassium compounds (2.1%). During 2020, mining was Chile’s fourth largest economic sector, responsible for 12.5% of GDP, 2.9% of formal employment and 59.5% of national export value. Although the mining sector overall was resilient to COVID-19, small miners felt the negative effects of the pandemic. In H1 2021, the sector underwent some operational troubles on the labour front, aggravated by a drought in central Chile, which ended up hampering production volumes. However, the very strong rise in international copper and molybdenum prices over the period more than compensated for the production slump, with the sector poised for a strong year.
