China is the world's most populous country and the largest producer of grain, fruits and vegetables, which makes it also the world’s largest producer and consumer of fertilisers, required to satisfy its demand for crops and other agricultural products. According to the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA), more than 40% of the fertilisers in China are used for cereals (rice, wheat and corn) and about one third are used for fruits and vegetables, which consume more nutrients than other crops. China has only 7% of the world’s arable land and the widespread use of chemical fertilisers has boosted its agricultural production. Chemical fertilisers, however, have been overused in China, which is causing a number of ecological environment problems and threaten food safety. China accounts for more than a third of the global fertiliser consumption, which is equivalent to the total consumption of both the U.S. and India. In 2015 China’s Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) reported, that local farmers use 2.6 times and 2.5 times more fertilisers per hectare, compared to the U.S. and EU, respectively. To increase the environmental and food protection, in 2015 the MOA implemented a new policy of capping total fertiliser consumption growth at 1% annually between 2015 and 2019 and achieving zero growth to 2020, which is the main reason for the deceleration of fertiliser demand in China.
