China Iron and Steel Sector Report 2017 4th Quarter

In the third quarter of 2017 the revenue of the ferrous metal smelting and pressing sector marked an increase of 14.6% y/y, reaching RMB 1.8bn. Steel prices continued to rise, as a result of the tightening supply of steel products due to the environmental campaigns launched by the government to control air pollution, while the demand for steel products in China remained strong. total profit of the ferrous metal smelting and pressing sector in Q3 2017 marked a sizable increase of 133.6% y/y, reaching RMB 111.2mn. China's largest steel enterprises reported record-high profits in the third quarter of 2017, following the surge in steel prices. In Q3 2017 the production volumes of pig iron and crude steel rose by 0.8% y/y to 184.3mn tonnes and by 8% y/y to 220.4mn tonnes, respectively. The output volume of steel products dropped by 1.7% y/y to 287mn tonnes, which can be linked with the government-led environmental inspection campaigns and the scheduled production cuts of the heavy-polluting steel plants in Northern China during the winter season.
