China is the largest producer of paper and paperboard in the world, according to a survey released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 2021. It produced a total of 127mn tonnes of machine-made paper and paperboard in 2020, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) show. It is also the largest consumer of paper and paperboard in the world. The sales volume of paper and paperboard in the year amounted to 118.3mn tonnes, according to a report released by the China Paper Association (CPA). The country is the world’s largest pulp and waste-paper importer as well. In 2020, imports of pulp and waste-paper reached USD 16.9bn.
