The year 2020 was particularly harsh for the global economy following the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic. The Colombian economy experienced its first recession since 1999, with GDP contracting by 6.8 y/y. The banking sector was no exception to the negative trends in the overall economy and suffered an increase in non-performing loans together with a deterioration in profitability due to a rise in provision expenses to cover potential losses coming from loan write-offs. However, high levels of capitalisation and liquidity of banks, coupled with a bold monetary policy by the Central Bank, allowed companies in the sector to remain solvent and highly liquid. Low active interest rates and several credit programmes launched by the federal government helped the sector to expand its loan portfolio despite strains in credit and financial markets following the COVID-19 crisis.
