In 2021, Colombia’s financial sector recovered from the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic. During 2020, financial entities had to increase their provisioning expenses, which affected their profitability, and there was a decline in their loan portfolios, mainly due to the performances of the commercial and consumer categories. The dynamic of the banking sector during most of 2021 was very positive. The loan portfolio gained traction, increasing by 7.3% y/y as of October 2021, due to the financial soundness of companies and households. Non-performing loans decreased during 2021, implying a lower risk and giving an additional boost to the profitability of the industry.
