Colombia's GDP grew by 1.7% y/y in real terms in 2024, driven primarily by private consumption on the demand side, which increased from 0.4% in 2023 to 1.6% in 2024. This strengthening of demand has allowed for the gradual recovery of the retail sector, which registered the highest growth in the last quarter of 2024. In December 2024, the retail trade index increased by 7.8% y/y in real terms, with expansion in 16 of the 19 sectors. The sectors with the highest contributions throughout the year were motor vehicles and motorcycles (0.7pp), information technology and telecommunications equipment (0.7pp) and other motor vehicles and motorcycles (0.5pp). Increased household spending on durable and non-durable goods was driven by reduced inflation and lower interest rates. In January 2025, consumer price inflation stood at 5.2% y/y, mainly due to services inflation.
