In Q2 2024, Colombia's GDP grew by 2.1% y/y in real terms, which was partly due to stronger household consumption growth, accelerating from 0.3% y/y in Q1 2024 to 1.2% y/y in Q2 2024. Despite a modest upturn, the commerce sector continues to face challenges. In August 2024, the retail trade index increased by 5.2% y/y in real terms, with expansion in 14 of the 19 sectors. The sectors with the highest increases were IT equipment (35.6% y/y), sound equipment (23.6% y/y) and household appliances (14.6% y/y). However, textiles and apparel (clothing) contracted by 7.8% y/y. The rise in household consumption of durable and non-durable goods was fuelled by lower inflation and interest rates. As of September 2024, consumer price inflation was 5.8% y/y, mainly due to food and goods, affected by fuel price adjustments, indexation due to high previous inflation and weather events.
