The infrastructure sector in Colombia is facing several challenges, including domestic political issues and international economic conditions affecting the performance of sub-sectors. Despite some economic variables, such as inflation and interest rates returning to the long-term goals of the Central Bank of Colombia, GDP growth over the medium and long-term is projected to be sub-optimal. The public sector plays an important role in the infrastructure sector, ensuring the flow of funds to allow for the financial closure of infrastructure projects and to maintain construction. However, president Gustavo Petro has stated that these funds should be directed not to infrastructure projects, but to water, sanitation and other social investments, which has caused alarm among infrastructure companies as one of the main players in public-private partnership initiatives. These issues have had an impact on construction sector GDP, which fell by 4.2% y/y in real terms in 2023. The sector's gross value-added (GVA) and foreign direct investment (FDI) also fell, by 12.3% y/y and 3.8% y/y, respectively, although a recovery is expected by the end of 2024 and during 2025.
