Between 2018-2024, crude oil production across the six CEE countries remained modest and relatively stable, with declines in mature onshore fields offsetting limited offshore gains. According to BP PLC data, global crude output rose by 2.2% in 2023, while production in most CEE countries showed no significant increase, underscoring the region's constrained upstream potential. Hungary's uptick in crude oil production from 2022 to 2024 was largely attributable to the successful deployment of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques, notably the injection of water and gases into its mature Százhalombatta and Algyő fields, which helped to unlock additional reserves in aging deposits. Slovakia and Czech Republic's negligible production remained almost unchanged, reinforcing their almost complete dependencies on imports. Meanwhile Romania, despite being the regional leader, saw crude volumes gradually but consistently decline as mature fields like Petromidia aged, though sustained investment maintained production near 20.7 million barrels annually as of 2024.
