Poland is a significant producer of wheat, sugar beet, apples, potatoes, poultry meat and beef within the European Union (EU). The country achieved a new record high in terms of poultry meat production (of 2.7mn tonnes) in 2022, following a rise of 7.5% y/y. Wheat production also reached a new record high of 13.1mn tonnes in 2022, with growth of 10.4% y/y. Additionally, Poland registered a new record high for apple output (of 4.3mn tonnes) in 2022, with an increase of 4.9% y/y. However, the output of key products, such as beef (540,590 tonnes), pork (1.79mn tonnes), potatoes (6mn tonnes) and sugar beet (14.15mn tonnes) declined by 2.6% y/y, 9.2% y/y, 14.8% y/y and 7.3% y/y, respectively, in 2022. The gross value added (GVA) of the Polish agribusiness industry declined by 1.7% y/y in 2022, reflecting the difficulties of the sector recovering from the weak performance in 2021 and the negative effects of the Russia-Ukraine war, which created inflationary pressures that led to higher production costs in 2022. Additionally, Poland has had to compete with cheaper cereal imports from Ukraine since 2022, leading to the application of an import ban on Ukrainian food products in 2023. In spite of the drop in the GVA of the Polish agribusiness industry, the trade surplus of the sector reached a new record high of USD 6.6bn in 2022 (+29.2% y/y). Exports reached a new record high of USD 23.7bn in 2022 (+19.9% y/y), while imports also registered a new record high of USD 17.2bn (+16.7% y/y).
