With over 660mn people, and a combined economy that represents the fifth largest in the world, the 10 countries forming the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region have been relying on fossil fuels to power their fast growth. The ASEAN economies saw their real GDP increase by an average of 1.9% a year in the 2018-2022 period, above the global average of 1.7% and well above the 0.5% rate at which developed economies expanded during the same period. ASEAN growth is expected to continue to outperform, and even quicken, with real GDP seen expanding by 3.2% and 3.6% in 2023 and 2024, respectively, according to estimates by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the October 2023 edition of its World Economic Outlook. For comparison, the global economy is forecast to grow by 2% and 1.9% in 2023 and 2024, respectively, while advanced economies will see growth of just 1.1% in each year.
