Over the pact decade, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region has emerged as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and a major manufacturing and trade hub. With a population of than 600mn people, the region is home to the fifth-largest economy globally that is playing an increasingly significant role in the global supply chain, leveraging its strategic geographic location between the Pacific and Indian oceans. Aiding this role is the region's transportation network, the development of which has been a key priority of the region's member states - Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. ASEAN governments are stepping up investments in transport infrastructure projects to address the region's transport challenges with the goal of achieving a seamlessly and comprehensively connected and integrated region. A major objective of the ASEAN Transport Sectoral Plan 2026-2030 is to enhance transport infrastructure and services across the region with a focus on ensuring the resilience and efficiency of supply chains to withstand global fluctuations, as well as the promotion and use of new technologies, such as port digitisation and automation, to improve efficiency and management of transport systems. Key transport infrastructure projects currently underway in the region include: the East Coast Rail Link, a USD 12bn railway project that will connect Port Klang on the west coast to Kota Bharu on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Jakarta's mass rapid transit (MRT), USD 9bn Manila subway expansion, the construction of a new terminal at Singapore's Changi Airport, expected to be opened in the mid-2030s and to cost some USD 10bn.
