Agriculture is one of the backbones of Indonesia's economy, contributing approximately 13% to the country's gross domestic product (GDP). The sector provides income for 38.7mn people, or the equivalent of 29% of the total workforce in 2022. Agricultural production is concentrated in small farms, which are inefficient and unable to respond adequately to rising domestic demand. As a result, there are plenty of opportunities for land consolidation and investment in mechanisation. The country has vast reserves of untapped land, as well as a mild climate that favours rice, palm oil, coffee, cocoa and fisheries production. Indonesia is the world's number one palm oil producer with almost 60% of global output. The country also ranks second in terms of rubber, and fourth by rice production. Although the government has long pushed for self-sufficiency in the production of key agriculture commodities, Indonesia still runs a negative trade balance on its agriculture account as the country continues to import large quantities of wheat, corn, soybean and sugar.
