Indonesia is the world’s third largest producer and consumer of rice and the largest producer of palm oil. The country is also the third largest producer of cocoa and ranks second in terms of wheat imports. Given its large population, Indonesia is one of the largest consumers of rice, wheat, oilseed and corn. The sector is an important employer in Indonesia, providing work to 34.6mn people, or 27% of the country’s workforce in 2019. The sector of agriculture, forestry and fisheries generated close to 13% of the country’s gross value added (GVA) in 2019. It also contributed 3.5% to the total exports and accounted for 5.8% of the total imports. Indonesia is running a deficit on its agricultural product account. In 2019, the foreign trade gap of the sector came in at USD 4.1bn.
