Indonesia is home to the largest automotive market in Southeast Asia. Nearly 7.5mn motor vehicles were sold in the country in 2019. More than two thirds of these, however, were two-wheelers. Low incomes make passenger-car ownership difficult for most Indonesians, so motorcycles and scooters are by far the most common type of vehicle. The share of two-wheelers in total sales stood at 85% in 2019. That is more or less the share motorcycle and scooters take in total motor vehicle production. Indonesia’s relatively poor motorisation rate, low labour costs and growing middle class will be the main sources of the sector’s expansion in the coming years.
