The Indonesian electric power sector is a crucial driver of economic development and employment growth, providing work for 355,300 people and contributing nearly 1% of GDP in 2024. The country's power system is characterised by large over-capacity and fossil fuel domination. Supply consistently outpaces demand as the country's economic growth has stabilised at 5% over the past few years. The country's power generation mix is heavily dominated by coal, which accounts for 54% of total installed capacity and over 67% of electricity production in 2024. Gas-fired power plants account for 26% of the capacity, while renewable energy sources contribute 14%. This reliance on relatively low-cost coal and gas has allowed Indonesia to maintain some of the most affordable electricity rates in the Southeast Asia region, benefiting industries by lowering their operational expenses. The state-owned utility Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) plays a key role in the sector, managing the transmission and distribution of electricity to 99% of the population.
