The food and beverage (F&B) industry is one of the growth engines of Indonesia's manufacturing sector and economy. The strength of the F&B industry in Indonesia is supported by abundant natural resources and increasing domestic demand. A home to the world's fourth most populous nation, Indonesia is one of the largest producers of palm oil, fish, cocoa and coffee globally. Household expenditure on F&B was equivalent to 21.3% of the country's GDP in 2022 and the F&B manufacturing sector's gross value added (GVA) accounted for 6.3% of nominal GDP. However, Indonesia relies on imports of products that cannot be produced locally, such as wheat, dairy and processed food products. The country is not self-sufficient on F&B and satisfies its rising domestic demand with imports from abroad. In 2022, the country imported F&B goods totalling USD 23.3bn, or about 10% of total imports.
