Indonesia's advancement in renewable energy adoption has been slow, with the country consistently lagging behind its stated targets. Coal remains the predominant source of electricity generation due to the country's abundant and cheap coal resources. Without adequate subsidy schemes, renewable projects are unable to compete with coal in terms of cost. By end-2023, the country had installed 13.1 GW of renewable energy (RE) capacity, contributing nearly 15% to the total power generating capacity. Hydropower is the dominant renewable energy source, with an installed capacity of 6.8 GW, followed by bioenergy at 3.2 GW and geothermal energy at 2.4 GW. Other sources, such as solar and wind power, have relatively small capacities of 574 MW and 154 MW, respectively.
