Retail is a dynamic sector with excellent prospects in Indonesia. The country boasts the world’s fourth-largest population, at 256 million in 2015, and is also the largest market in South-East Asia. Global consultancy A.T. Kearney ranked Indonesia 5th in its 2016 Global Retail Development Index, up from the 12th place in the previous year’s ranking. A.T. Kearney valued Indonesia’s 2015 retail sales at USD 324bn, the third-highest value within the top five, after China and India at top 1 and 2, respectively. Convenience stores are the most popular and consolidated retail channel in the country, where traditional family-owned stores are still a mainstay, in rural areas in particular. Department stores and supermarkets and hypermarkets are more fragmented, but are set to consolidate and grow in the future.
