India's agriculture sector showed record harvests in the latest rabi season, which ended in April 2026. The outlook for the upcoming kharif season, however, is more challenging. India's fertiliser supply, which is mostly dependent on imports from the Middle East, is suffering significantly due to the US-Israel-Iran war, which began in February 2026. Additionally, there is a growing likelihood of an intense El Niño event during the kharif season, which could lead to droughts that cripple the season's agricultural output. Over the last six months, the Indian government has unveiled several significant policy measures aimed at raising agricultural output, enhancing animal husbandry capabilities, and strengthening control over the country's deep-sea fisheries resources.
