The agribusiness sector plays an important role in India's economy, accounting for 16.6% of the country's GDP in FY2023 and 7.6% of total exports in 2022 (calendar year format). The sector employed approximately 43% of the country's total workforce in 2022 (calendar year format), according to data from the World Bank. In line with this, the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) estimated that the agribusiness industry represented 45.5% of total employment in FY2022. The access to a vast and cheap workforce and a large and expanding domestic demand allowed India to become one of the largest global producers of rice, wheat, maize, cotton, soybean, sugar, coffee, banana, poultry meat and shrimp. However, the high presence of marginal and small farmers with limited access to technology and financial assistance undermines the ability of the agribusiness industry to improve its productivity levels. Despite the productivity limitations, the advantage of sheer numbers allowed the country to achieve relatively high levels of international competitiveness, therefore, its three main segments (crop, livestock and fisheries) present chronic trade surpluses.
