The agribusiness sector plays an important role in India's economy, accounting for 16.2% of the country's GDP in FY2024 and 7.9% of total exports in 2023 (calendar year format). The sector employed approximately 46.1% of the country's total workforce in FY2024, according to data from the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO). India is the most populous country in the world, therefore, the Indian agribusiness industry successfully exploited the advantages of the access to a vast and cheap workforce and the access to an enormous and expanding domestic demand. These two advantages allowed India to become one of the largest global producers of rice, wheat, maize, cotton, soybean, sugar, coffee, banana, poultry meat and shrimp, among others. Furthermore, the advantage of facing relatively low labour costs allowed the Indian agribusiness industry to achieve relatively high levels of international competitiveness, therefore, its three main segments (crop, livestock and fisheries) present chronic trade surpluses. Nonetheless, the agribusiness industry also presents low levels of productivity as there is a strong presence of marginal and small farmers with limited access to technology and financial tools.
