The recent rapid development of India’s economy, which grew by 7.6% y/y in FY2016, and increasing ncome per capita combined with urbanisation, have boosted the demand for financial services such as lending, insurance and asset management. Results have included the opening of more than 215mn new bank accounts over the past 5 years and a drop of close to 20% in the number of dormant accounts. However, this rapid expansion has reflected on the quality of the balance sheets of the local banks and especially of the state-owned ones. NPAs are at record-high as a percentage of total loans, and banks seem to be lacking the tools necessary to solve this concern. The government has tried to address the issue by injecting liquidity into the biggest state-owned banks, but time alone will tell if this is enough.
