India possesses one of the largest food & beverage industries in the world as the country is a leading producer of rice, wheat, maize, sugar, soybean meal, soybean oil, coffee, banana, poultry meat, milk and shrimp, among other products. The food & beverage sector in India created synergies with the agribusiness industry as the latter is the main provider of cheap and abundant inputs for the former. Additionally, the rising demand from the domestic market is creating incentives for food & beverages producers to expand their output capacity. On the one hand, the food & beverage sector is expected to be one of the fastest-growing industries in India. On the other hand, the food & beverage industry only represented 1.26% of the country's GDP in FY2024 and 3.2% of India's total exports in 2023 (calendar year). To materialise the industry's potential, higher levels of vertical integration are required at the firm level, however, a sizable proportion of India's production capacity is operated by the small firms which have limited economies of scale, technological capability and financial arm. The productivity enhancement in the food & beverage sector is also required to turn its chronic trade deficit into a trade surplus as local production is not high enough to meet domestic demand and the improvement in international competitiveness will allow Indian firms to improve their export performance in foreign markets.
