India Mining Sector Report 2018/2022

India has abundant mineral resources comprising fuel, metallic, and non-metallic minerals, with proven reserves of some 90 different minerals spread across its territory. “Mining” (or “mining and quarrying”) is defined as including the extraction of oil and gas as well as of solid minerals, and it is a backbone sector for the Indian economy, providing inputs to many manufacturing industries. Mining accounted for around 2.2% of the country’s overall GVA in the financial year 2017 (FY2017), as against 2.4% in FY2016. The value of Indian minerals production in FY2017 was INR 2.61tn, of which the output of fuel minerals accounted for 80%, metallic minerals for 16%, and non-metallic minerals for 3%. India is self-sufficient in many major minerals but still reported imports of mineral products worth some INR 8.86tn in FY2017, or 22.8% of the total imports of goods and services in that year.
