India is the world’s third-largest crude steel producer, third-largest finished steel consumer and the global leader in sponge iron manufacturing. The country claims nearly 6% of the global crude steel production and around 5% of the pig iron output. Steel manufacturing is estimated to contribute some 2% to the nation’s GDP, while employing more than 600,000 people. Per capital steel consumption is among the lowest in the world but is gradually rising, reflecting the strong fundamentals and good prospects of the industry. The sector has recently been challenged by a structural global oversupply and pricing pressure. To counter this, the government has adopted measures to protect steelmakers from excessive imports and has also announced infrastructure upgrade programmes to help boost steel demand in the mid- to long-term in India.
