Often labelled as the breadbasket of the world, Latin America is a leading player in the global agribusiness industry. From cereals to poultry meat, from fishing to fruit, Latin America hosts important producers in the entire agriculture value chain. The region comprises some of the major producing countries, such as Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, which thanks to their vast fertile lands occupy a prominent position in the global trade of products such as soybean, maize, beef and poultry. In 2023, the agriculture and livestock sector had great prominence in the region's gross value added, which ranges from 2.5% in Mexico (where manufacturing industries overshadow the relative importance of the sector) to more than 9% in more primary economies such as Colombia and Ecuador. The importance of the sector is even larger in the regional external trade balance, accounting for 3.7% of total exports in Mexico (again, a relatively low share due to the country's large manufacturing sector) in 2023, but around a quarter of total exports in Brazil and Argentina. The export-oriented nature of the regional agribusiness industry has exposed the sector to the high volatility of prices on global markets since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Q1 2020. In the aftermath of the pandemic, a combination of logistics bottlenecks and rapidly growing demand pushed up the international prices of agricultural commodities, benefiting local producers and exporters. However, adverse climatic events, such as the severe droughts affecting Chile, Uruguay and Argentina, as well as higher costs, mainly due to the sharp rise in price of energy, fertilisers and freight, have deeply affected the profit margins of local producers.
