In 2019, Mexico consolidated its position as the world’s sixth-largest vehicle manufacturer, with an output of 3.95mn units. During the year, strong foreign demand – especially from the US – was the major driving force for Mexico’s automotive industry, with motor vehicle exports reaching a new all-time high of USD 75.8bn, 3.4% up y/y. On the other hand, new vehicle sales in the country contracted for the third year in a row, as Mexico entered recession in early 2019. The automotive industry was among the sectors hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico, as it posted double-digit declines in both production and sales in April and May 2020, when vehicle plants and car dealerships were forced to stop operations. Although some plants were allowed to reopen at end-May 2020, the recovery of the industry is expected to be slow, as it will be contingent on a rebound in vehicle demand in both Mexico and the US.
