Four-wheel motor vehicle production in ASEAN (particularly Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Myanmar) dropped by 31.6% y/y in 2020 due to the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, output saw a strong rebound in 2021 (+24.4% y/y) and 2022 (+23.4% y/y), reaching a volume of 4.4mn units. This recovery was driven by higher domestic sales within the ASEAN region in 2021 and 2022, complemented by higher exports. In 2023, four-wheel motor vehicle production in ASEAN declined by 1.5% y/y, down to 4.3mn units (still above the pre-pandemic volume of 4.2mn units reported in 2019). The decrease was, among other things, due to lower domestic sales in ASEAN.
