In 2022, agriculture, fisheries, and forestry will account for 8.92% of Malaysia's GDP and employ 12.1% of the labor force. Palm oil, rubber, cocoa, and timber products account for roughly half of the output, with tropical fruits and rice also contributing significantly. Malaysia is the second-largest producer and exporter of palm oil in the globe, behind Indonesia. As no additional land is available for palm oil production, any increase in national output must come from yield and productivity increases. In addition to having a significant presence in Indonesia, Malaysian palm oil companies have invested in palm oil refineries in key markets such as Europe, India, China, and the United States. Numerous of Malaysia's largest and most successful businesses are palm oil plantation enterprises in which the government holds a stake. The majority of the protein ingested in the country is poultry. The poultry and swine industries are relatively robust and advanced. Rice is a fundamental food in Malaysia, but the country imports approximately 30% of its rice requirements. Malaysia has relatively robust agricultural research capabilities, particularly in the palm oil industry, and an effective extension system. The GOM subsidizes rice production through support prices, subsidies for inputs, and subsidies for consumers. Although the Ministry of Agriculture concentrates on other sectors, virtually all significant new agricultural investments are destined for palm oil plantations.
