Natural gas provides for approximately 40% of Malaysia's energy requirements, petroleum products for 34%, and coal, for 22%. In other words, fossil fuels satisfy more than 90% of Malaysia's energy needs. During the ten-year forecast period (2023-2032), it is expected that the dominance of fossil fuels will remain essentially unaltered if the current trends continue, as the proportion of renewables in electricity generation will only increase modestly.Nevertheless, a joint report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC) indicates that Malaysia's energy system is at a crossroads. The country is faced with the decision of either investing in its diminishing oil and gas resources or taking decisive steps to harness its renewable energy potential. In addition to the short-term threat of price volatility on international markets and the long-term threat of climate change, the energy and gas sector in Malaysia is also at risk due to reduced reserves. Malaysia has pledged to assume a portion of the responsibility for the global community's efforts to address climate change. All exploration and production operations in Malaysia are under the control of Petronas, the national oil and natural gas company. Petronas is the dominant entity in the upstream sector, where it participates in production-sharing contracts (PSCs) with both domestic and international corporations to investigate and exploit Malaysia's oil and gas resources. According to estimates by Rystad Energy and information made available by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), ExxonMobil, Shell and ConocoPhillips are the three largest multinational energy companies in Malaysia that produce the most oil. Petronas is the dominant company in the downstream sector of Malaysia, despite the presence of a number of other regional and international corporations.
