Malaysia’s renewable energy (RE) installed capacity reached 8.7 GW in 2020, ranking it as the fourth biggest market in ASEAN, according to data provided by the International Renewable Energy Association (IRENA). The share of RE in the country’s power capacity mix stands at 22%, while the sector’s contribution to power generation was nearly 15% in 2020.  Malaysia’s RE sector is dominated by hydropower, representing 72% of total RE capacity in 2020. Hydropower plants generated 13% of the country’s electricity in 2020. Solar is the second biggest source of RE, accounting for 17% of the RE capacity mix. Bioenergy makes up for the remaining RE capacity. Malaysia does not have wind power installations. The country is one of the leading manufacturers of solar components in the world. A number of  global solar incumbents have established local production plants with a total capacity of over 8 GW. These include First Solar, SunpowerLONGi Solar, Jinko Solar, and Hanwha Q CELLS.
