In line with the global trends, the consumption of high-value-added Internet services in Malaysia is growing, which fuels strong performance in fixed and mobile broadband services both in terms of subscribers and consumption intensity. Telecom players are capitalising on this business opportunity by deploying 4G and non-standalone 5G networks for mobile broadband services and fibre optic networks for fixed broadband services. In fact, fibre optic technology is redefining the Malaysian telecom industry as it is a key asset for telecommunication convergence. Fibreoptic networks allow companies to provide fixed broadband, fixed telephony and pay TV services. Fibreoptic networks are also a necessary condition for the deployment of standalone 5G networks. The fibreoptic infrastructure in Malaysia is largely controlled by one player, Telekom Malaysia, which, at the same time, is not a dominant factor in the mobile telephony market. The three largest mobile telephony providers in the country, CelcomDigi, Maxi and U Mobile, control the 4G network and the non-standalone 5G network, however, they are still at an early stage of the deployment of their own fibreoptic network.
