In line with the global trends, demand for Internet services in Malaysia continues to expand at a healthy pace, fuelling strong performance in fixed and mobile broadband services both in terms of subscribers and consumption intensity. Telecom players are capitalising on this business opportunity by deploying non-standalone and standalone 5G networks for mobile broadband services and fibreoptic networks for fixed broadband services. In fact, fibreoptic technology is dominating the Malaysian telecom industry as the key asset for telecommunication convergence. Fibreoptic networks allow companies to provide fixed broadband as the main product, and fixed telephony and pay TV services as complementary products. Fibreoptic networks are also a necessary condition for the deployment of standalone 5G networks. The fibreoptic infrastructure in Malaysia is largely controlled by one player, Telekom Malaysia, which, at the same time, is not a dominant supplier in the mobile telephony market. The three largest mobile telephony providers in the country, CelcomDigi, Maxi and U Mobile, control 4G and non-standalone 5G networks. However, they are still at an early stage in the deployment of their own fibreoptic networks. Developed fibreoptic and 5G networks are essential for any company to successfully compete in the telecom market. To support their competitive ambitions, U Mobile and Telekom Malaysia announced in May 2025 a ten-year partnership to deploy a second 5G network based on Telekom's fibre optic network.
