Renewable sources of energy account for some 30% of the power capacity mix and 20% of power generation in the Philippines. In 2023, at 3.75 GW, hydroelectric power was the largest renewable energy (RE) source in the country in terms of capacity, followed by solar and geothermal at at 2.3 GW and 1.95 GW, respectively. Wind power installed capacity in 2023 was 593 MW but there are plans to expand capacity in this segment to nearly 48 GW. One of the major contributors to the growth of the renewable energy sector in the Philippines is the Renewable Energy Act of 2008, which provides a legal framework for the development and promotion of renewable energy in the country. Under the Philippines National Renewable Energy Programme (NREP) 2020-2040, the share of renewable energy in the country's generation mix is supposed to reach 50% by 2040.
