The electrical energy sector is responsible for slightly above 7% of Poland’s GDP and its strategic importance for the country cannot be underestimated. Electricity output inched up by 0.5% y/y to 162.63 TWh in 2016, while the sales revenue of the “electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply” sector fell 3.9% y/y to PLN 188.94bn. Employment in the sector has been declining for many years now, and stood at a little over 66,000 at end-2016. Nevertheless, the sector still employs around 3.3% of all industry employees in Poland and is also the major user of Poland’s hard and lignite coal output. The ageing of the power generation and transmission infrastructure is a major concern for the sector, which at the same time must brace itself for the adoption of new technologies.
