Poland's electricity sector has been rebounding over the past couple of years, driven by high energy prices and increased public and private investment, including support from the EU. Additionally, the electrification of various sectors and the growing number of prosumers—particularly in photovoltaics—are expected to sustain the sector's momentum. However, several factors have constrained its growth. The key challenge remains the ongoing energy crisis in the EU, exacerbated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has kept energy markets volatile and created uncertainty for investors. Poland's economic growth in 2023 was the slowest since 2020, at just 0.3% y/y in real terms (according to real GDP). As a result, following a rebound in 2021 and 2022, electricity demand fell by 4.3% y/y in 2023. Nevertheless, the push for decarbonisation and electrification across various sectors has fuelled expectations of increasing electricity demand in the future, as Poland works to electrify its vehicle fleet, modernise its electricity grid and expand its nuclear, solar and wind power capacity.
