Poland Pharma and Cosmetics Sector Report 2017/2021

Poland is the sixth-largest market in Europe (understood as EU28 plus Norway and Switzerland) for pharmaceuticals as well as for cosmetics, with respective market sales of around PLN 38.3bn in 2017 and of at least PLN 16bn in 2016 (some estimates, indeed, put cosmetics market size as high as PLN 22bn). As illustration of the scale, the 2016 sales value of represented 1.96% of the GDP in case of pharmaceuticals and of the cosmetics market represented 1.18%. The output of the Polish pharmaceutical sector came to PLN 16.1bn in 2016, while cosmetics production was estimated at PLN 6.39bn. In the pharmaceutical sector Poland is a net importer, but in the cosmetics sector it has a growing trade surplus and is the sixth largest exporter in Europe. The two sectors employ roughly the same number of people – with combined employment at over 40,000.
