Poland relies on coal to meet 70% of its energy needs, which is the largest share among EU member countries. In recent years, however, the central European country has been pursuing a green agenda that will see a gradual decrease in the use of fossil fuels and increasing adoption of renewable energy sources (RES'). Renewables accounted for 40% of Poland's power generating capacity in 2022, while their share in the country's power generation mix was half as much, at 20%. In 2022, the country grid-connected 22.7 GW of renewable-based power capacity, according to figures provided by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Half of the new capacity came from solar installations, with wind farms collectively accounting for nearly 35%. More than 80% of the total solar facilities are small, providing less than 50kW of power.
