Poland relies on coal for 70% of its energy needs, the highest proportion among EU member states. However, in recent years, the country has shifted towards a greener agenda, aiming to reduce fossil fuel use and increase the adoption of renewable energy sources (RES). In 2023, renewables represented 44% of Poland's total power-generating capacity, although they only accounted for 26% of the actual power generation mix. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Poland had 28.8 GW of grid-connected renewable power capacity as of end-2023. Over half of this new capacity stemmed from solar installations, with wind power making up nearly a third. In addition, more than 80% of all solar facilities are small-scale, each providing less than 50 kW of power.
