Romania’s oil and gas sector is one of the oldest in the world and ever since it took the first steps toward liberalisation, the industry has progressed substantially in terms of competition and infrastructure network. However, it failed to establish itself as a net exporter and in 2015 the oil segment exhibited an independency degree of only 37.6%. Oil import volume increased at a CAGR of 3.2% in 2011-2015 at the expense of domestic production, which contracted at a CAGR of 1.3% in the same period. The reverse trend was observed on the natural gas market, whose degree of independence was 98.4% in 2015. Natural gas production grew at a CAGR of 0.4% in 2011-2015, whereas the volume of imports plunged by 28% in the same period.
