As 2030 approaches, Singapore is well on its way to achieving the 2 GW installed capacity goal set in its Singapore Green Plan 2030 initiatives. Yet, challenges to the adoption and integration of renewable sources still exist. Solar installed capacity as of 2024 was at 1.2 GW, yet only 2.1% of total electricity generated came from this renewable energy source. In comparison, electricity generation from bioenergy (waste-to-energy) generators in 2024 reached 1.7 TWh, while solar energy generated 1.3 TWh. Solar and bioenergy sources accounted for about 4.9% of total electricity generation in 2024. In a country where electricity consumption closely correlates with Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the recent economic expansion of 4.4% y/y in 2024 will have undoubtedly resulted in increased greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). For reference, in 2021 GHG emissions stood at 70.9mn tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent but by 2023 they rose to 74.3mn tonnes, driven up by economic recovery. Sustainability targets aside, with power demand from microchip factories, data centres and artificial intelligence facilities expected to grow in the coming years, renewable energy production and imports in Singapore will have to go up significantly.
