Excellent technical potential for solar, wind and hydroelectric energy generation along with generous government support for the renewable energy sector in Vietnam between 2018 and 2021 has led to a rapid expansion in clean energy capacity and generation. With an installed capacity of 46,012 MW, Vietnam accounts for more than two-thirds of the clean energy capacity of the entire region of Southeast Asia. In 2023, the domestic renewable energy sector generated 118,820 GWh of energy, which accounted for 44.6% of the generation mix, head and shoulders above the ASEAN average of 23%. However, the speedy expansion of the sector has created its own set of challenges that caused growth to stall since 2021. Decisive actions by policymakers in 2022 and 2023 are expected to re-ignite the renewable energy industry in Vietnam.
