Africa’s renewable energy sector has experienced robust expansion over the past decade, with installed capacity increasing at a CAGR of by 6.6% in 2010–2019, according to data provided by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The African continent, however, lagged behind many other regions, such as Asia, Oceania, Central America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and Europe in terms of deployment of renewable energy projects during the 2010-2019 period. In 2019 the sector’s growth moderated to 4.3% y/y and end-year capacity stood at 48.4 GW, or 1.9% of the global. New additions amounted to 2 GW, well below the record 4.8 GW of 2017, and represented only 1.1% of the global.
