Refan is a Bulgarian provider of prestige and mass-market perfumes, cosmetics, health and beauty aids as well as personal care products. The company offers a variety of fragrance products for both men and women, including perfume, cologne, eau de toilette, body spray and gift sets. It also produces bath and body products, such as soaps, deodorants, body lotions, gels and creams.
Refan specialises in production mostly based on rose oil. The company also produces prestige fragrances with a focus on licensed designer brands like Christian Dior, Chanel, Calvin Klein, Ungaro, Givenchy and Elizabeth Arden.
Refan was founded by local businessman Stefan Popov in 1994 with the help of French cosmetics maker Refan Paris. Initially, the enterprise was importing and marketing ready-made fragrances but later started to buy raw materials from France, Italy and Germany and produce bulk perfumes. Gradually, the firm launched production of cosmetics and aromatherapy products in rented premises.
In September 2001, the company opened a production facility in the Russian city of Ryazan, 200 kilometres south of the capital Moscow. The unit, called Refan Line, has an annual production capacity of 3,000 tonnes of perfume.
In 2002, the firm opened a EUR 3.5 million production plant near Bulgaria's second biggest city of Plovdiv.
The factory, which spans over 32,000 square metres, has a monthly production capacity of 10,3 tonnes of soap, 22 tonnes of perfumes and over 33.6 tonnes of shampoos and liquid beauty aids. It can also manufacture 17.7 tonnes of body lotions, gels, creams a month.
Refan exports around 65% of its production to EU member states.
