Initially, the company was involved in operating public transportation as well as electricity production and distribution. In 1946, after the nationalization of the energy sector, the company was transformed into Dopravni podniky hlavniho mesta Prahy. Over the years, the company's name, organization, and management have undergone several changes. In 1991, Dopravni podnik was transformed into a joint-stock company, with the city of Prague being its sole owner. The company is also a shareholder in other transportation-related businesses. It focuses on improving the quality of its services, including ticket offerings, pre-sale locations and machines, transportation regularity, implementation of public transportation preferences, and communication with passengers. Dopravni podnik operates the metro system in Prague, which consists of three lines (A, B, and C) with a total length of 65.4 km and 61 stations. The company also operates trams on a network of 143 km of tracks, with 26 daytime and 9 nighttime lines. There are a total of 770 operational trams, including 393 low-floor trams.
